Tokenization in Africa: Yield farming revolutionizing real life

Real life yield farming: How tokenization is transforming lives in Africa
Blockchain technology is sparking change in Africa’s farming sector, addressing issues like market access and fair pricing that have long plagued farmers.
Take Sophia Wambui Ngamate, a 54-year-old farmer from Kenya. Thanks to One Million Avocados, she has planted over 120 avocado trees. The Kenyan crypto project uses orchard tokenization to plant a million avocado trees across Africa.
The project has provided Sophia and others with training, connections to fellow farmers, fertilizers, and access to better markets. This digital revolution is providing tangible benefits, equipping farmers with tools, knowledge, and financial support to transform their lives.
Across Africa, over half of the population relies on farming for their livelihoods. However, farmers often face challenges like limited access to credit and high transaction costs, hindering their productivity and profitability.
Emerging technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things offer innovative solutions to these challenges. Earlier this year, Project Mocha, a Kenyan initiative, began tokenizing coffee trees on the blockchain to help coffee farmers access funding for rehabilitation, equipment, and training.
Smallholder farmers can sell tokens representing their coffee trees, giving token holders a share of the coffee sales revenue for 10 years. This helps farmers mobilize resources and boost productivity, providing a transparent and traceable system from farm to consumer.
Similarly, One Million Avocados in East Africa tokenizes avocado trees as NFTs, allowing farmers to secure financing with digital assets representing a tree’s future yield. IoT technology complements blockchain by collecting real-time data on farm conditions, supporting informed decision-making.
These projects are transforming traditional farming practices, connecting rural farmers to global markets and resources. By harnessing the power of blockchain and other innovative technologies, African farmers are seeing new opportunities and paths to prosperity.
